The science behind The Lachlan Trilogy

The Lachlan Trilogy is a work of fiction, but it is fiction that takes its science seriously. The speculative elements are extrapolations from real physics rather than inventions from nothing: the stasis field, the black hole power source, the container's impossible longevity. This note explains where the real science ends and the speculation begins.

These notes are drawn from the appendices to all three books, combined and deduplicated into a single reference. Readers who want only the stories are unaffected by ignoring this page; readers who want to check the speculation can do so.

The Geology

The geological setting of Book One is entirely real. The Lachlan Fold Belt is one of the great geological provinces of eastern Australia: a complex of ancient marine sediments and volcanic rocks deformed and metamorphosed during the Palaeozoic era. The rocks in the hills above Taralga are genuine: dacite ignimbrite from the Devonian Wombeyan Volcanics sequence, first described by L. Hansen in 1979. On the Irvine and Baragar total alkali-silica classification diagram, these rocks plot in the andesite field despite their dacitic composition: a quirk of their specific alkali content that Dick notes in Chapter Three, and which is scientifically accurate.

The Silurian reef system Soo-Lin studies, which she names Yeong-won, is also grounded in the real geological record of the southern tablelands. Silurian carbonate reefs, built by stromatoporoids and tabulate corals in the warm shallow sea that covered much of eastern Australia 419 million years ago, are well documented in the region. The three new species Soo-Lin formally describes from the container specimens bear Gundungurra names formalised through the Land Council: a detail that matters to me, and which reflects the reality that this country has been known and named for far longer than European science has been describing it.

The unconformity between the Silurian carbonates and the overlying Devonian ignimbrites is real stratigraphy. It is the geological contact that marks the eruption that entombed the container. The violence of that eruption, which Dick reads in the rock fabric in Chapter Three, is written into the geology of this part of New South Wales.

The Gravity Survey

Phil's discovery begins with a publicly available gravity dataset: the kind of regional geophysical data that Spatial Services NSW actually maintains and makes available to researchers. Airborne gravity surveys of this type are standard tools in mineral exploration and geological mapping. The physics of gravity anomalies is straightforward: a mass excess produces a positive anomaly, a mass deficit a negative one. A body denser than its surroundings shows up as a positive gravity anomaly in the data.

The confirmation survey Phil commissions uses a CGG fixed-wing UAV gravity system: a real technology, capable of the resolution he needs at the line spacing described. The 3.2 milligal anomaly in the Spatial Services data, rising to 4.1 milligal in the UAV survey, is the kind of signal these instruments are designed to detect. The physics of what is producing that anomaly is where the speculation begins.

Magnetotellurics

Magnetotellurics is a real geophysical method, widely used in mineral exploration and crustal research. The Earth is continuously bathed in natural electromagnetic fields generated by lightning activity worldwide and the interaction of the solar wind with the ionosphere. These fields induce electrical currents in the ground; the way those currents flow depends on the electrical resistivity of the rock. By measuring the natural electromagnetic field variations at the surface, MT can image the resistivity structure of the subsurface to depths of kilometres.

The survey parameters described in this story are technically defensible: a broad frequency band of 1 to 1000 Hz, with maximum sensitivity to a target at approximately 800 metres depth in resistive volcanic rock in the 50 to 100 Hz band. The 3D resistivity inversion run on Imperial College's supercomputer cluster is the standard processing approach for MT data of this complexity.

The electromagnetic voids that appear in Marcus's model at the positions of the three power sources are not insulating, not conducting, simply absent from the resistivity framework. They reflect the genuinely anomalous physical properties of stabilised micro black holes, which sit outside conventional electromagnetic theory.

The Drilling Programme

The Boart Longyear deep core drill described in this story is a real manufacturer of deep drilling equipment. The specifications given, rated to 1,200 metres in hard rock, are representative of professional deep exploration drilling.

The fracture zone encountered at 623 metres is physically consistent with what would happen when a stasis field activates against an incoming pyroclastic flow: rock shattered radially by an energetic impact, the fractures filled with anomalous cementing material. The energy of the boundary interaction would fracture the surrounding rock in a characteristic pattern. The iridescent material filling the fractures is the same anomalous alloy found on the container's surface: the fingerprint of the stasis field boundary, printed in the rock 419 million years ago.

The drill intersecting the craft's upper flank at 748 metres, rather than its top or underside, is a direct consequence of the 60-degree dip of the strata. The craft, in its original horizontal orientation within a tilted rock sequence, presents its flank to a vertical drill.

The Black Hole Power Source

Micro black holes, black holes of very small mass, are theoretically possible within general relativity, though none has ever been observed. A black hole of approximately 10^8 kilograms (roughly the mass of a small mountain compressed to subatomic scale) would produce a strong positive gravity anomaly detectable at the surface, exactly as Marcus calculates. The gravitational physics here is real.

The problem with such an object is longevity. Stephen Hawking showed in 1974 that black holes are not perfectly black: they emit thermal radiation and lose mass over time. The evaporation timescale for a black hole of 10^8 kilograms is given by:

t ≈ 5120π G² M³ / ℏc⁴

For M = 10^8 kg, this gives a natural lifetime of approximately 23 days. Left to its own devices, the container's power source would have evaporated within a month. The fact that it has persisted for 419 million years requires an explanation: that explanation is the superradiant cavity.

Superradiance and the Stabilisation Problem

Superradiance is real physics. In 1971, Roger Penrose described a mechanism by which energy could be extracted from a rotating (Kerr) black hole, now called the Penrose process. A decade later, William Press and Saul Teukolsky showed that certain electromagnetic waves incident on a rotating black hole are amplified: the wave extracts energy from the black hole's rotation and exits with more energy than it entered with. In the right resonant cavity geometry, this creates a continuous amplification loop: effectively a black hole laser.

The superradiant cavity in the container is my extrapolation from this real mechanism. The idea is that the cavity both extracts energy from the black hole and returns some of that energy to suppress Hawking evaporation: a driven equilibrium that converts what would be a 23-day evaporation event into a geological-timescale slow burn. This is not a perpetual motion machine: every extraction-return cycle has losses, and the black hole loses mass slowly rather than catastrophically. The design achievement is not infinite duration but sufficient duration.

Whether such a cavity could actually be engineered is far beyond current human technology. But the physics it exploits is all real: superradiance, the Penrose process, resonant cavity amplification. I have extrapolated the engineering, not the underlying science.

The Stasis Field

The stasis field that has preserved the container's contents for 419 million years is the most speculative element of Book One's science. I have not grounded it in any specific real mechanism; it is an acknowledgement that a civilisation capable of building a micro black hole power source might also be capable of engineering a local region of altered time. The field boundary fingerprint, the iridescent cementing material in the rock at the field's edge, is the physical evidence of the boundary between field and not-field, where biological chemistry has been pressing against a technological boundary for 419 million years.

The degradation figure Soo-Lin calculates, 0.42% cumulative loss of biological integrity, comes from a stasis efficiency of 99.999999% per thousand years, compounded over 419 million years. The mathematics is straightforward; the physics of what 0.42% degradation means for a biological system that has been in stasis since before the first trees existed is a question the story explores rather than resolves.

The Stasis Field Degradation

The stasis field is not perfectly efficient. Its design specification is 99.999999% biological integrity maintenance per thousand years, sufficient across any mission duration the designers modelled.

Across 419 million years the calculation produces: remaining integrity ≈ e^(–0.00419) ≈ 99.58%. A cumulative loss of approximately 0.42%, concentrated in the highest-molecular-weight biological compounds within the field. Not catastrophic. The entity is functional. But 0.42% is not zero.

Soo-Lin Park noticed this three years before anyone understood what it was. Her lab note from the first year of the container programme reads: 'preservation fidelity 99.6% — unexplained 0.4% structural anomaly in highest-MW compounds.' She filed it as interesting and moved on. The rescue vessel's healer component, monitoring the scout craft's heartbeat signal from the lunar surface, has been tracking the same degradation since Day Zero of Book Two and considers it the primary clinical priority.

The Silurian Sea

419 million years ago, eastern Australia lay in tropical latitudes south of the equator. The sea that covered the region was warm, shallow, and rich in life: the Silurian was a period of extraordinary marine biodiversity, with reef systems comparable in complexity to modern coral reefs. The organisms Soo-Lin studies are all real Silurian fauna, accurately described: stromatoporoids, tabulate corals, brachiopods.

Something came to that reef 419 million years ago and collected specimens. It found something worth finding. It kept the record. The rest of the trilogy is the story of what happened next.

The Integrated Entity: A Single Intelligence in Three Parts

The entity aboard the scout craft is not three individuals working together. It is a single integrated consciousness that requires three functional components to exist completely: navigation, analysis, and sample management. Each component is incapable of full operation without the others. They do not consult, vote, or deliberate. They are one mind processing one problem through three simultaneous cognitive pathways.

This is why the airlock remained open during the escape from the Devonian eruption: departure was not possible until all three components were aboard. It was a constraint, not a choice.

The four-component entity aboard the rescue vessel is a search and recovery configuration: navigation, healer, analyst, engineer. The healer component exists because the thing being recovered may be damaged and requires assessment. The four-component entity is a qualitatively different class of intelligence from the three-component exploration entity.

Cold Chemistry and Cognitive Speed

The entity's biochemistry operates at minus 23 degrees Celsius, using the compound we call ammonia as the primary biological solvent rather than water. The story names this compound trihydrogen nitride, since the entity does not use our nomenclature.

Biological processes follow a temperature-dependent rule: reaction rates roughly double for every 10 degrees of temperature increase. At minus 23 degrees versus human body temperature of 37 degrees, a 60-degree difference, the entity's biochemical processes run approximately 64 times slower than human biochemistry. The consistently slow response times through the communication channels are not deliberation or caution. They are the entity operating at maximum speed.

This cold chemistry may confer different cognitive strengths: deep structural analysis and long-term pattern recognition over rapid inference and quick calculation. The entity's choice to open communication with prime numbers and pi, the most structurally fundamental mathematical concepts, is consistent with an intelligence that excels at deep structural understanding.

The Atmospheric Incompatibility

The entity's internal environment is not compatible with Earth's current atmosphere: trihydrogen nitride solvent, minus 23 degrees, nitrogen-rich atmosphere with specific gas ratios. The incompatibility is not marginal.

Earth's atmosphere contains approximately 21% oxygen. The entity's solvent compound, in the concentrations maintained inside the craft, is flammable in air in the range of 15 to 28% concentration by volume. Uncontrolled mixing of the two atmospheres with an ignition source present could produce a combustible mixture. Concentrated vapour exposure is acutely toxic to human respiratory tissue.

The entity knew this. It chose not to open the airlock at Day Zero: not because it lacked the capability, but because it had characterised the external atmosphere through the borehole sensors and registered the atmospheric incompatibility as a constraint on action. The dome built in Book Three is the engineering solution to this constraint: an airtight interface structure with atmospheric management, temperature management, and safety monitoring.

The entity chose to wait for the surface beings to build the dome. That choice, to trust beings it had not yet communicated with to understand the problem and solve it, is one of the most significant decisions in the story.

Panspermia: The Shared Alphabet

The trace organic compounds in the container's preserved atmosphere include amino acid structures related to those found in terrestrial biochemistry and in meteorites and comets throughout the galaxy. Both life forms, the entity's and ours, drew from the same cosmic molecular library. Different books. Same alphabet.

This is not a coincidence in the story. It is consistent with the hypothesis of panspermia: that the building blocks of life are distributed through the universe by cometary and asteroidal impacts and that wherever life arises, it may begin from a shared chemical toolkit. The Murchison meteorite, which fell in Victoria in 1969, contains amino acids including some found in Earth life. The chemistry of the cosmos appears to favour certain molecular architectures.

The implications of this shared biochemical heritage are left open at the trilogy's end. Soo-Lin was the first to notice it. It may matter more than anyone yet understands.

The Rescue Vessel and the Lunar Position

The lunar far side has been geologically stable for billions of years: no atmosphere, minimal meteorite impact gardening at any given location, essentially unchanged surface conditions. A vessel placed there in deep stasis 419 million years ago would be intact and accessible today. The lunar far side was also not visible from Earth until 1959, when the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft photographed it for the first time. For the purposes of this story, it has been the perfect hiding place.

The rescue vessel is not an automated relay. It is a crewed search and recovery vessel in deep stasis: its four-component entity preserved, its power sources conserved, waiting for a signal that took 419 million years to arrive.

Galactic Rotation: The 1.7 Galactic Years

The Milky Way rotates. The Sun, and with it the Earth, completes one orbit of the galactic centre approximately every 225 to 250 million years: the galactic year. 419 million years is approximately 1.7 galactic years.

In that time every star in the galaxy has moved. The home system of the entity's civilisation, wherever it was, has rotated roughly 1.7 times around the galactic centre relative to its position when the scout craft landed. It is not where it was. The rescue vessel's navigational calculation, completed upon full transition from stasis, establishes that the home system is effectively unreachable given current power reserves and the scale of galactic drift over the elapsed time.

This is not speculation. The galactic rotation rate is well measured. The calculation is real arithmetic applied to real astronomy. There is nowhere to go.

Communication: Mathematics as a Universal Language

The choice to open communication with pi reflects a genuine principle in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Specifically: the first prime number of digits of pi, which is itself prime. Mathematical relationships are universal: prime numbers, physical constants, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter are the same everywhere in the universe regardless of what language or sensory system an intelligence uses. A sequence that demonstrates knowledge of prime numbers is a statement that can be understood by any mathematics-using intelligence regardless of biology.

The molecular communication channel is a logical extension of this principle. Soo-Lin sends the structural descriptions of organic compounds from the container specimens, using the universal language of chemistry to describe the entity's own biology back to it. The entity's corrections to her sequences are among the most significant moments in the story. They are choosing to share what they are.

A Note on Sources

The geological characterisation of the Wombeyan Volcanics is based on published research including L. Hansen (1979) and Irvine and Baragar (1971). The geophysical methods are in active professional use: gravity surveying, magnetotellurics, deep drilling. The physics of superradiance, Kerr black holes, stasis field efficiency, Q10 biochemical temperature dependence, panspermia, and galactic rotation are all established science, applied here to technology and biology that remain speculative.

The Spatial Services NSW gravity programme is real. Narelle Underwood's contribution to NSW spatial infrastructure is genuine and significant. Burraga and the Gundungurra country in which this story is set are real. The name Gundhang is fictional and is not a word from the Gundungurra language.

The entity's internal solvent is the compound we call ammonia. It is described in the story using the entity's own implied framework, trihydrogen nitride, because the entity does not know what we call it, any more than we know what it calls us.

Everything else is fiction. But it is fiction that tries to earn its extrapolations.
