The Lachlan Incident — opening sample
The ground-penetrating radar unit had been losing its calibration for three days, which was why Phillip Coenraads had recalibrated it twice before breakfast and once more after, standing in the paddock in the early light with the instruction manual open on the tailgate of the LandCruiser and a mug of tea going cold beside it. The unit was old: Consolidated Lachlan Resources had bought it second-hand from another company in 2019 and it had been temperamental ever since, prone to phantom reflections in the 400 MHz band that turned out to be nothing more than variations in soil moisture. He knew its failure modes the way you knew the failure modes of anything you'd worked with long enough. He trusted it within its limits.
Phillip was twenty-seven, lean in the way that three field seasons in broken limestone country made you lean, with capable hands and the permanent slight squint of someone who spent a lot of time reading landscape in bright light. The back of his neck and his forearms had the colour of someone who remembered sunscreen most of the time but not always. His face was the kind that got more interesting the longer you looked at it, not conventionally handsome, but with the quality of someone who had spent enough time alone in difficult places to have stopped worrying about how he appeared and started worrying about more interesting things. He wore what he always wore in the field: heavy cotton work pants with too many pockets, most of them actually used, a faded blue shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, and boots that had been resoled once and probably needed it again. The hat on the seat beside him was a battered broad-brimmed felt that had started life a different colour. He was a PhD candidate in structural geology at Macquarie University, and he was here because CLR paid better than the department and because the Lachlan Fold Belt was his research area anyway and because Wayne Pickett, CLR's project manager, was reasonable to work for and didn't ask too many questions about why a PhD student needed three weeks off every field season to do his own research. Wayne's philosophy was that the survey got done, the data was clean, and what his contractors did with their own time was their own business. This was a good philosophy. Phillip appreciated it.
By seven the heat was already building. The cicadas had started before sunrise; they always did in December, a sound so continuous it stopped being sound and became a quality of the air itself, a vibration in the eucalypts and the dry grass and the back of your neck. The smell was extraordinary: resin releasing from the grey box trees in the heat, sun-warmed dust on the track, something flowering in the creek line he couldn't identify from here. The southern tablelands in early December had this quality of everything being at its most itself, as if the landscape had been concentrating toward this moment all year.
The survey grid ran southeast from the access track across broken country: limestone outcrops pushing through the thin soil, steep-sided gullies cutting between the ridgelines, grey box on the flats giving way to stringybark and apple box on the slopes. The Lachlan Fold Belt in this part of the southern tablelands had real structure to it; you could see the bones of the place if you knew where to look, the rock forcing itself through wherever the soil was shallow, the creek lines following fault traces that went down a long way. It looked, to anyone without the right kind of eyes, like rough New South Wales sheep country that had never quite submitted to the idea of being a farm. Brown grass already bleaching toward straw in the early summer heat. Wire fences following ridgelines where nothing else would. The occasional dead tree silver against the sky. Phillip had spent enough time in this landscape to find it beautiful in the way that difficult country was beautiful, the way that knowing what was underneath made the surface make sense.
He ran the first transect at eight-fifteen. The data came back clean: early Devonian tuff sequence at the expected depth, the usual dip consistent with regional folding, nothing anomalous. The second transect: also clean. He noted the readings in his field book, drank some of the cold tea, started the third transect.
Anomaly 7 appeared at 11:43.
He almost walked past it. The reflection was subtle: a change in the return signal that the software flagged with a yellow marker rather than a red one, which in the unit's classification system meant possibly worth a second look rather than stop and investigate. He'd seen hundreds of yellow markers over three field seasons. Most of them were boulders, tree roots, variations in the water table, the buried remains of old fence lines. He logged it, noted the grid reference, moved on to complete the transect.
At the end of the transect he sat on a rock and ate an apple and looked at his field book. The anomaly was nagging at him the way data nagged when something was wrong, not wrong as in erroneous, but wrong as in inconsistent with everything around it. He'd been looking at this sequence for eighteen months. He knew what the return profiles looked like. The yellow marker at grid 582441E didn't look like a boulder or a tree root. The geometry was wrong for either. The density signature was wrong for anything geological he could account for.
He walked back to it.

The ground at the grid reference was unremarkable. A slight rise, barely perceptible, that he would not have noticed without the survey data telling him it was there. At the eastern edge of the rise, where the paddock met a narrow strip of remnant bush along a dry creek line, a dense thicket of blackberries had colonised a roughly circular area perhaps fifteen metres across. Old growth: the canes were woody and thick, the kind of blackberry that had been there for decades, growing in and over something that gave the thicket its slightly raised profile. Nobody had cleared this patch.
Phillip stood at the edge of the thicket and looked at it. He checked the ground first: December heat meant eastern browns and red-bellied blacks would be active, and this sort of sheltered spot was exactly where they liked to be. Nothing moved. He put on the heavy shirt he kept in his pack for exactly this kind of situation, pulled on his gloves, and went back to the LandCruiser for the machete.
The canes were old and woody and took some work. He cut a path methodically, not rushing, clearing the thorns properly rather than forcing through them. The blackberries were thick for two metres and then thinned abruptly. He stepped through into the clear space within.
Sat at the centre of the thicket, perhaps thirty to forty centimetres proud of the ground and continuing below it, was a surface that was not rock and not concrete and not metal as he understood metal and not anything he had a name for.
Phillip stood very still.
He looked at it for a long time without moving or thinking anything in particular. This was something field work had taught him: the first response to something unexpected should be observation, not interpretation. The interpretation came later and was always better for having looked first without agenda.
The surface was exposed over an area roughly the size of a kitchen table. Curved, he could see the curvature, with a radius of perhaps a metre if the curve continued consistently. The colour was difficult to name: a dark grey that was also, in the right light, faintly iridescent, the way certain minerals were iridescent but not quite like any of them. The texture was too smooth to be natural. It looked manufactured but without seams or identifiable features.
At the edges where it met the soil it disappeared underground. At one point near the centre a blackberry root had grown across the surface, thick as his thumb, and at the point of contact, the root had stopped. Not been deflected. Stopped. Ended. As if the surface had simply declined to participate in biology.
Phillip crouched down and looked at this junction for a long time.
Then he took off his gloves, reached into his pack, and found his field notebook. He opened it to a fresh page. He drew what he saw: the exposed surface, the curvature estimated, the root detail, the surrounding soil, the blackberry growth pattern. He noted the dimensions as best he could estimate them. He noted the GPS coordinates from his phone. He noted the time: 12:07.
Then he sat down in the small clear space within the blackberry thicket, his back against the curved surface, and took off his hat, the sweatband dark with the morning's work, and set it on his knee. The surface behind him was cool, which was another thing to note, cooler than the ambient temperature, cooler than any surface sitting in December sun should be. He ate his lunch.
He was not ready to tell anyone yet. He needed ten more minutes of it being just his.

In his field notebook, after the sketch and the dimensions and the GPS coordinates, he wrote:
Object cool to ambient touch. Surface temp estimated 2-3°C below ambient. Consistent across exposed area. Not solar depletion, no differential between shaded and unshaded regions. Active thermal management? Source unknown.
Surface consistent, non-geological. Manufactured, not formed.
Root contact anomaly: growth terminates at surface. Mechanism unknown.
Everything about this is inconsistent with known geology. (understatement)
He looked at the last line for a moment. Then he put the notebook away and considered his situation.
He had two calls to make. The order mattered.
He called Wayne first, because that was the honest thing to do. Wayne Pickett was a project manager, not a scientist, and his response to unusual finds was a practised calm that came from years of things going wrong on remote sites in unexpected ways. Phillip described the anomaly in survey terms: unusual metallic signature, anomalous density, partly exposed at surface. Wayne asked if it was going to delay the survey. Phillip said it might. Wayne said to keep him posted and to document everything properly for CLR's records.
Then Phillip called Dr Richard Flood.
